The Way of the Wolf

Irene sighed and put her cup down then summoning all her courage got up and looked at Kat waiting for her to continue. Kat looked at Dazz with a question on her face but Irene nodded so Kat spoke.

"Father said that Alex is back. He said you would know what it means"

Irene nodded and sighed

"He is here isn't he?" She asked
"Yes"
"What!" Darryl stood and looked back and forth between Kat and his mother in utter disbelief.
"Relax Darryl he only just got here. He is here because of Alex" Kat pauses "and Jade?"
"That explains why I could reach him so easily even though I couldn't find the bracelet"

Kat opened her mouth then shut it quickly and said nothing. She didn't know whether she should admit she took it or even if her dad wanted Irene to know. Darryl looked at her quizzically and went to send her a probing thought but she shut him out. A look of hurt crossed Darryl's mind but he also remained silent. Eventually all eyes fell on Irene and she knew that she should have told her children long ago but she had wanted to forget.

"Oh Michael" she said softly and then with watery eyes looked at Kat and Darryl and told them to sit
"Before I go on tell me something, you can still shift can't you and that is why I can't reach Jade"
"Yes, she was shot by Mike" Dazz said in an almost matter of fact tone
"Oki..." Irene takes a sip of tea and then begins to tell Kat and Darryl about Michael and what really happened those fateful years ago

Tristan was on his way home when he spotted a young female along the track. It was late and that was highly odd so he stopped and said hello

"Oh hi" she said "I didn't know anyone was out here"
"I live out here"
"Really? Is this private property then? I'm so sorry" she stared at him with innocent eyes
"That's okay. My name is Tristan" He replied in a love sick puppy and she smiled as she noted he had fallen under her spell so easily. She had expected him to put a fight but it seemed Jade was obviously not that important to him
"I'm Donna, would you mind showing me around?"

Tristan offered her his arm in a gentlemanly type fashion and she took it. Not however without looking over her shoulder and winking to a stranger in the shadows. He smiled back and then headed off into the night. Now that he had made sure Donna was doing her task to make sure Tristan would betray Jade he could now work on getting Mike to play his game. He was going to kill Michael and Irene one way or another and Jade's apparent blind hatred was what he was counting on just to make his plans work. Oh revenge was sweet and being entombed as he was and for as long as he had been wanting them all dead and the family line destroyed so he could be free again. As he walked he once again cursed Michael. Despite all his powers he was still limited to human form and he wished as he wished day after day to once again feel the force and rush he got when he changed into his true form. Walking was such a dreary way to travel after all.

Marc was home and once again had his nose in a book. He was trying to concentrate but is just hadn't been his week it seemed because try as he might he just couldn't focus. He closed the book and gave up. Placing it aside he let his mind wander and again it wondered back to Darryl. He blamed him for keeping Jade away from his arms. He didn't know why. Ultimately he was angry at Tristan. He stole Jade and the worst of it was the fact that Marc also knew he would betray Jade. Another gift he had that he had kept to himself. No one really wanted to hear about there future and Marc couldn't always be sure about it but this he knew was real. He sighed understanding that he wasn't really angry at Darryl but fate. After all Darryl wasn't to know was he? Marc asked himself this over and over again and eventually fell into a fitful sleep, the kind that brought on true dreams, dreams of the future.

As Irene slowly told the story, Kat reached across and took Darryl's hand. With physical contact her shield encompassed him as well, and her mind once again opened to him.
Why did you take Mum's bracelet? he asked.
To use as a focus for Dad, of course, she replied with a thought smile.
Darryl instantly comprehended the reasons she hadn't told him, and stopped feeling hurt almost instantly. The two listened to Irene's story, the subtle link providing Darryl with details from Kat's mind relating to Michael's telling of the story. Between them, they completed the tragic tale of two best friends...

Michael and Alex had grown up together, in a small country town in the heart of Mexico. The two had been inseparable their entire lives, and had done everything from investigate ancient ruins as children, to attending the same teacher when they decided to further their studies in the art of shamanism, and both having wolf select them as their totem. That, however, was where things had started to go wrong. Michael had a natural aptitude for shamanistic practices, where Alex had to struggle to feel contact with the person he was attempting to heal. He could not open himself to the spirit in public rituals, and once got lost in the underworld. From that day forth, Alex was not himself. Michael began to suspect that a demon or vengeful spirit from the underworld had taken over Alex's body, and was corrupting his soul. The day Michael discovered Alex sacrificing a wolf was the end of their friendship. Instead of going back and asking his teacher for help, Michael confronted Alex and managed to bind the demon within Alex's body. Furious, Alex attacked, and Michael was badly hurt. Alex escaped, leaving Michael bleeding on the desert sand.

It was Irene who found Michael, took him home, and healed him. They moved in together, and got married whilst Michael continued his hunt for Alex. It was when Irene was just pregnant with Jade that Michael finally found him. This time he bided his time, watching, and waiting. Irene had grown sick of moving all over the country after Alex - whom she had never seen and at times doubted he even existed. She was happy to settle in one place, pregnant with Jade, with her small 2 and a half year old son, whilst Michael hunted Alex in the woods behind their house. Around that time, Michael met Maya, who was also hunting Alex. Maya was also a shaman, the first female shaman Michael had ever met. Together they hunted, and celebrated the turning of the seasons in the basest way.

Somehow, 6 months into Irene's pregnancy, Alex discovered Michael was hunting him, and fled the country. Michael prepared to shift his family, but Irene refused to go. Then Maya discovered that she was pregnant. Maya wished to continue hunting Alex, and Irene did not, and that was when Michael and Irene separated, and Michael and Maya married. They followed Alex, and Irene stayed in America, to raise her children.

And now, Alex was back in America, and in their wake, followed Michael and presumably Maya. Michael feared that his binding was working loose, and that soon the demon Alex had become would be free to wreak havoc upon the world. He had to stop him, and banish him back to the underworld, before it was too late, and he needed all the help he could get...

Marc awoke suddenly around midnight. He had no idea why he was awake, but he knew that Tristan wasn't yet home, and that he should go and see Darryl and Kat. Marc dressed quickly, grabbed his car keys, and drove over to Darryl and Jade's house. The light was still on in the living room, and through the window he could see Kat and Darryl on the couch, and Irene sitting in her chair. Marc tapped lightly on the window, and let himself in.
"Hello, Marc," said Irene tiredly.
"Hello, Irene," Marc replied, then turned to Darryl. "Something's wrong. Tristan isn't home yet, and he should be."
"Maybe he's with Jade?" suggested Darryl.
"No," Kat replied. "I sent him home earlier this evening, just after I went to check on Jade. He should have been home hours ago."
"Do you think..." Darryl began, looking at Irene, but she shook her head.
"No. For many years I refused to believe Michael when he told me I was in danger because I was married to him and had birthed his children, but now I finally understand. I was so stubborn... If only I had believed Michael about Alex, perhaps we would still be together..." Irene's voice wavered slightly, and Kat took her hand comfortingly. Irene took a deep breath, and continued, "But Tristan isn't any relation to us, and Alex wouldn't have any interest in him... Unless..."
Darryl began to blush.
"Darryl, did Tristan and Jade...?"
He cleared his throat uncomfortably.
"Well, I don't know how *far* they went, but at Sarah's party, um..."
"My little girl, growing up so quickly..." sighed Irene. "Kat, you had better get hold of Michael. We're going to need him I think. Jade and Tristan's, uh, relationship, is going to complicate things."
Darryl handed Kat the bracelet from his pocket, knowing that whilst she didn't need it, it would make contact a lot easier, and would also mean that Irene wouldn't wonder overly about why the bracelet was out of the room. Kat closed her eyes, and linked to her father.

A few moments later, Kat opened her eyes.
"He's coming."
Whilst they waited for Michael to arrive, Darryl and Kat linked with Marc, and fed him the story. Marc began to understand a few of his dreams more clearly, and also began to comprehend the meaning behind Tristan having slept with Jade.
At that moment, a large wolf pushed open the door and stood on the threshold. He shimmered, and Michael stood in his place.

Irene shuddered at the change of form. She had never gotten used to that. Then she burst into tears. Michael went to hold her but Kat stopped him and let Darryl do it instead.
"I'm sorry" said Irene in a soft voice.
"So am I" said Michael taking her by surprise "I never should have let you get into this mess"
"Why don't you go to bed mom" suggested Darryl "You have been awake all night and the rest would do you good"
"I suppose so, oh alright"

Irene left the room and headed for bed. Before anyone could say anything Darryl said he was going to look for Tristan and was gone. Kat looked at her father and laughed
"Just like you old man" she teased
"There is no time for that" he said abruptly "You better go follow him and bring him back"
Kat was taken aback and sulked but changed form and left all the same.

It didn't take long for Kat to find Darryl. When she drew close to him he glared at her and told her to be quiet. Kat swore feeling like it wasn't her day and then saw what Darryl was watching. There in front of them was Tristan and this unknown woman having sex in the clearing. Kat could feel Darryl's anger and was afraid of what he may do. Darryl stepped forward and deliberately snapped a twig. Tristan jumped but the woman just laughed.

"Greetings Kathryn, who is your friend?"
"So nice to see you Donna" Kat replied icily "My friend here is Darryl, best remember that name for he and I will be the ones to kill you"

Kat proceeded to step forward and stand by Darryl's side. They both barred their teeth and tensed their muscles ready to attack. Donna withdrew a ceremonial killing knife and stabbed Tristan straight in the heart.

"Sex was good baby but I don't need you anymore" Donna said and then changed into a puma and bolted.
Tristan was crying finally awake from the dream he was in. As he lay there in shock, dying he whispered "I'm sorry Jade" but Kat and Darryl were following Donna in a wild hunt and didn't hear him. As they gained on Donna and could see her tail just behind the next tree and gun was fired. They stopped quickly and peered ahead to see what happened. There lay Donna quite dead ironically shot by Mike. Evil beget evil they thought and chose that time to leave and head home.

"Shame" said Kat "I was really looking forward to tearing her apart"
Darryl looked at her suprised and quizzically.
"What?" she replied innocently "I thought she would deserve it after what she did to my mother"
Darryl just laughed.

***

Alex congratulated Mike on his shooting skills. Mike smiled. Alex then blew a kiss towards the Puma and waved goodbye. After all he never intended to grant Donna her wish. Oh the joys of being evil was the fact that people were stupid enough to believe he would grant them their deepest desires. He smiled at Mike. Here was another sucker. He could feel Mike's heart beat in the thrill of adrenaline and all he had to do was reach out and squash it like a bug. Not yet he thought, I still have need of him...

Jade had noticed the strange wolf she didn't know was gone and had been gone quite some time. Most the other wolves had stopped watching her because they all thought she was sleeping. Jade quietly got up and headed out the cave. There was something about the new wolf she didn't like or trust and she wanted to know. However she knew she needed to be healed and fast so she headed home. The room that remained hidden in her bedroom at home had amazing healing properties and she knew that if she could get there she would be fine. No-one not even her mother knew how magickal that room had become since Jade had spent most her time harboring it's powers and unlocking it's secrets. She had no recollection of ever doing this in many cases she just did what seemed right. However her instinct was telling her to go there and one she could not resist.

During her travels she went along a path that few traveled. She smiled remembering how special it was, it was where she had lost her virginity. She never told Darryl and she never told Tristan either. In fact no-one knew who she had lost it too but most thought it was to Tristan. Jade sighed. She had wanted to tell Darryl she really had but every time she went to she couldn't. It was like the words just wouldn't come out. As she neared the clearing she stopped in shock. There was Tristan with another female. What happened next seemed to be a dream and next thing she was alone. She saw Kat and Darryl run off after this female that was now a puma. She neared Tristan and despite the risks changed back to human form. It took all her strength to stop from crying out in pain. She watched Tristan die and heard his final words.

"I'm sorry too" she said before heading home.

All she wanted to do was go home to that magickal room that would heal her. Nothing else mattered to her now.

***

Donna lay quite still for a very long time. The shot had caught her in the upper chest/shoulder, and the shock had been enough to keep her still until she regained her senses and played dead. She'd seen Alex with the man who'd shot her, and knew she couldn't trust him any more - not that she had really been able to in the beginning. After she was sure there wasn't anyone still around, she shifted human again. The shift hurt a lot, but she knew she needed her hands to get the bullet out. Leaning against a tree, she used her ceremonial knife to open the wound a little more. She dug out the bullet, and several fragments of bone, which she placed beside her on the ground. Knowing she didn't have the strength to walk back to the clearing just yet, Donna rested until the faintness passed. Being naked didn't help. After half an hour, she collected the bone fragments and the bullet, and struggled to her feet. The wound was still bleeding a lot, and Donna knew she'd have to stop it soon. She walked slowly back to the clearing, taking her time, resting whenever she became dizzy.

Eventually, Donna reached her clothes and Tristan's rapidly cooling body. She took his shirt to the stream, and sat down carefully. She partially shifted to get the claws and teeth to tear his shirt to strips. Shifting back, she bathed her wound, almost passing out again. Looking about the clearing, she saw a small yarrow plant. It wasn't mature, but it was the only thing available. She stripped it and chewed it to make a paste, which she then spread over her wound. She placed a pad of damp cloth over the paste and tied it in place with the remnants of Tristan's shirt, tying the knot with one hand and her teeth. It wasn't the best first-aid job she'd ever done, but it was the best she could do in the circumstances.

After another rest, Donna went back to her clothes, and pulled them on. She cleaned her knife on Tristan's jeans and looked at him. With a mocking little salute, she walked out of the clearing and back to town.

Kat and Darryl returned home to find Jade and Michael standing in Jade's room. Jade's wound was almost completely healed, and Michael was doing something which speeded the healing process.
"What are you doing?" demanded Darryl.
Michael looked up.
"I'm healing Jade, what does it look like?" he replied. "I'm drawing on the power that seeped into my room to heal her. I don't know how she did it, but Jade has somehow transformed the previous energy into almost entirely healing energy. It's something worth investigating anyway, in a way she has transformed the entire room into a healing charm."
"Oh."
Darryl and Kat sat on Jade's bed and watched as the wound slowly pulled itself together. After about 45 minutes, there was nothing but a light scar, which looked several years old.
"I'm impressed, Dad. I didn't know you could do *constructive* magick," Kat teased.
"What??" Jade screeched.
Obviously she had regained her short temper with her health and her wits.
"Oh, dear," murmured Darryl, as Jade started thinking up blistering comments to bestow upon her father.
The fuse however, was cut before Jade blew up, with the timely arrival of Irene.
"Jade!"
Irene rushed to her daughter and embraced her. Jade hugged her mother tightly, wincing slightly as the action pulled at her scar, but not really caring. Michael was watching the two somewhat wistfully. Kat noticed, and was somewhat surprised. She'd never thought about how Michael must have felt leaving his small family to go to Romania.

At that moment, Marc called from downstairs that the kettle had boiled, and everyone moved downstairs. After everyone was seated with either coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, Kat and Darryl told of what they'd seen in the woods.
"Are you sure she was dead?" asked Michael.
"We didn't exactly stop to check," Kat snapped. "Alex and Mike were both there too."
Darryl squeezed her hand to calm her down.
"Maybe we should go and check," Michael suggested, so he and Darryl left the house, whilst Irene, Jade, Kat and Marc, cleared up.

Irene hadn't let Jade out of her sight since she'd returned home, and surprisingly, Jade didn't mind the constant surveillance. Kat stopped Marc in the living room, whilst Jade and Irene were in the kitchen.
"Hey, Marc, I'm sorry about how I snapped at you before. It's just..."
"I understand," replied Marc with a smile, putting an arm around her.
"Jade's important to all of us."
"It's just I never had a sister before, and to think that I might have lost her because of something I did..."
"It's OK," Marc repeated, giving her a hug. "It wasn't your fault."
Kat sighed. So did Marc.
"Irene and Jade are talking," Marc commented, tilting his head towards the kitchen. "We probably shouldn't disturb them until Darryl and your dad get back."
"He's Jade and Darryl's dad too," commented Kat as she led Marc to her room.
"And I'm really sorry about what happened to your brother..."

***

Michael and Darryl returned about half an hour later. Jade and Irene emerged from the kitchen, all traces of tears gone. The thought that she might have lost "her baby" had hit Irene rather hard, and it had taken Jade a while to comfort her. Luckily, Irene was now back to her practical self, although she was glad Darryl and Michael had shifted before they entered the house. Kat and Marc entered the room, all traces of Marc's tears washed away too. He was dreading having to tell his parents what had happened. All looked at Michael, who looked furious.
"Kat, did you take her clothes?"
"Like I would ever wear anything that she had touched," scorned Kat.
"Then she's still alive," said Michael. "I smelt her blood around the clearing, followed it from the place where she was shot... She's still alive, DAMMIT!"
Surprisingly, it was Irene who went to comfort him, making him sit down, stroking his hair soothingly, and murmuring softly in his ear. At exactly the same moment, Kat and Jade got the same idea and shared a somewhat excited glance. Luckily for them, both their parents missed it.
"There's nothing we can do about it now. Come on, you need to get some sleep, you may as well stay here. You can sleep and we'll organise something for Tristan... Gods, poor Nicole..."
"It's Ok," said Marc. "I'll go and tell Mum and Dad. I'll take the body home and say I found him in the woods. They'll assume he was robbed."
Irene nodded, and Kat squeezed his had supportively. Marc left. Michael went to bed. Kat and Jade sneaked off to Jade's room to discuss their idea. Irene and Michael obviously still loved each other, so all they had to do was get Irene and Michael to attend the ball together. The town ball was tomorrow night, and Irene didn't yet have a date. It shouldn't be too difficult to convince Michael that he needed to be there to protect her.

Plotting done with, Jade and Kat relaxed. Irene had suggested that Kat wear one of the dresses Jade had made for the shop, but they hadn't had time to go down and look at them with everything that had gone on. Jade's dress had been dropped off by Nicole already, and was hanging up in her wardrobe. The girls decided to go and look at the dresses, and drove to the shop, as Irene refused to let them walk through the woods, despite it being now early morning.
