The house on the Hill

The next week was difficult. Michael was still hanging around, and he started leaving notes, flowers, and phone messages for Kat. Then he started calling in the middle of the night and not saying anything, and the flowers turned to dead ones. Kat went with Glenn to the police station again, and whilst they said they'd send a patrol car around the area, they still wouldn't do anything about it. Both Kat and Jade lost all faith in the justice system at that point. Glenn took to spending the nights with them, and Kat seemed very comforted by this. Jade wouldn't admit it, but it was nice to have a man in the house, and as her father couldn't be there, Glenn was the closest they could get.

Erick and Lucia were stuck in Colorado. The airlines had gone on strike, and they couldn't get a flight out, and everything was booked out. They'd managed to find a hotel room for the week, but they wouldn't be able to get back for at least 2 weeks. Jade and Kat had told their parents about Michael, but although they were worried, they couldn't do anything about it. They said they'd call the police and keep in regular contact, but above that there wasn't really anything they could do. Jade and Kat refrained from informing their parents about the midnight phone calls and deliveries of dead flowers; they did not want to worry them too much.

Either Michael was adept at dodging the police, or the police weren't doing their job very well, because no matter what Michael seemed to do, or how often Kat and Jade complained, nothing seemed to happen. Jade was feeling quite lonely. Usually in times like this she and Kat would move into a single room, like they had slept when they were younger. It helped both to sleep better, and neither tended to get nightmares anywhere near as often when they were in the same room. Jade remembered through the long nights when she had been ill, Kat had refused to sleep anywhere else but by her side, despite the doctor's concerns. They had made their way through that together, but now that Glenn was staying with them, Kat spent her nights with him, rather than with her sister. Jade had to admit to herself that she was jealous. She missed the comforting feel of her sister's body behind her, and the nights were long, frightening and lonely.

School was hard. Michael was there, and whilst Kat avoided him as best she could, there were always impromptu meetings in the halls. Michael knew Kat's schedule as well as she did, and often "just happened" to be in a convenient location to bump into her. Jade was not disrupted anywhere near as often as Kat, but still his presence chilled her. Glenn dropped them off at school, and another of Kat's friends, Derek, started driving them home after he had heard the full story. And still the police did nothing.

On Saturday, however, Kat finally decided she'd had enough. She *was* going to go to Glenn's party, and she *was* going to have a good time. After determining that the girls would be OK for the afternoon, Glenn left them to ready his house for the party that night. Kat convinced Jade to wear her new jeans and one of Kat's tops - the top was simple and blue, but it was form-fitting and Kat declared her suitably attired to be her sister. Then she forced her into a chair and applied light make-up. Jade protested mightily, but Kat merely ignored her, and experimented with her face until she was satisfied. Then, as Kat decided to start playing with Jade's hair, Jade put her foot down, and pointed out that Kat was running out of time to get herself ready, and that her hair was fine the way it was. Kat was adamant that Jade should let her at least put some clips in it, and Jade allowed that, knowing Kat wouldn't give her any peace until she did. Once Kat was finally satisfied, she allowed Jade to look in a mirror. Jade gaped at the face that looked back at her.

"Is that *me*?"
"Of course it's you."
"I don't look like that!"
Kat laughed.
"You do now."
Jade stared for a while.
"Wow."
Kat laughed again.
"I'm glad you like it. This is my lip-gloss. I want it back after tonight. Every 45 minutes, go to the bathroom and refresh it."
"Why?"
"Because I said so!"
Jade laughed.
"Yes ma'am."
"Good. Now scoot. I want to get ready before Glenn comes back."

Glenn collected them half an hour before the party was due to start. Jade opened the door and Glenn stared.
"Wow, Jade, you look great!"
Jade blushed slowly, then smiled at him.
"Thanks."
Kat came downstairs, and moved over to the door. Glenn kissed her lightly hello. Kat was wearing black heeled sandals, stockings, a short black skirt, and a black and purple lace top.
"You look good," said Glenn, peering down her top.
Jade almost missed the slightly irritated look that flickered across her sister's face before she smiled.
"Thanks."
"Ready to go?"
"Yes."
"Good."
The three left the house.

The party was well under way 4 hours later. Jade had surprised herself by having a good time - she'd flirted with a couple of guys who she didn't know from school, and had consumed a couple of beers - she didn't like beer, but it was free, and that's what she'd been given. She was sitting on a couch, talking to Nicole's brother, Darryl. Whilst it had been fun talking to strange guys who didn't know her, Jade wanted some normality too, and Darryl provided that, as she knew him already. Kat had surrounded herself with her friends as Glenn had wandered around introducing people, and was sitting on a couch on the other side of the room, talking to a group of people who she often went out with. She was leaning on a guy Jade knew from school, but his name currently escaped her. He seemed to be enjoying the view though. Jade had been keeping an eye on her sister, noticing that Kat was probably drinking more than she should be. Kat hadn't been drinking beer, but mixed spirits, given to her by various males around the room. Jade had been very careful not to let anyone else near her drink, but she couldn't keep an eye on Kat's all the time, and she suspected that Kat had consumed more alcohol than she was aware of. Kat was only a little person, and the alcohol was affecting her quite strongly. Jade was considering going over to her sister and talking her into standing by the window, when Glenn appeared in front of her and Darryl.

"Hello, you two. Having a good time?"
"Yeah," replied Darryl, with a nod. "Good party, man."
"Thanks. Jade?"
"Yes," she replied. "But I think you should check on Kat. I think someone's spiked her drink."
Glenn looked over, then turned and walked over. He lifted Kat from the couch and held her up as he spoke to her. Then he glared angrily about the room, and carried her from the room. Jade excused herself from Darryl, and followed. Glenn carried Kat into his bedroom, where he lay her on the bed.
"Stay there, love."
"Mmm, ok," Kat replied, slurring her words a little.
Glenn caught sight of Jade.
"Can you get me a glass of water? A big one."
"Sure."
Jade got the water, and Glenn lifted Kat, seating himself on the bed, and Kat in his lap. She snuggled up to him, and began murmuring. Glenn suddenly scowled.
"What?"
"Someone did more than spike her drink."
"Huh?"
"I think she's taken a roofie."
"A What?"
"Rohypnol. It's a date-rape drug. Listen to her, she's high as a kite."
Jade moved in, and Kat was babbling about Michael being a bastard and stalking her and leaving things in her locker.
"You didn't tell me that," Jade accused, but Kat wasn't really paying much attention.
"Here, love, drink this."
Glenn held the glass of water, which Kat obediently drank.
"Go back down and have fun," said Glenn tiredly. "I'll stay with Kat until she falls asleep."
Jade nodded, and went back downstairs.

Glenn came back downstairs about an hour later.
"She's asleep," he reported. "And I shut the door."
"Good," Jade smiled. "Thanks. I'll go up there once I've finished this."
"Thanks. I can't believe some of the bastards around here..."
Glenn wandered off to talk to a couple of people, and Jade chatted to Darryl and a couple of his friends while she finished her beer. It was about 45 minutes later when Jade finally excused herself to check on Kat. She opened the door quietly, and peeked at the shape on the bed. Jade turned on the light, and gasped. Kat was gone. And where she had lain was a single, rotting rose.

Had Jade been holding anything she would have most certaintly dropped it. Instead she walked forward and picked up the rotting rose gripping it hard in her hands not noticing the thorns cut into her hands. She crumpled down and huddled trying to gain comfort from the bed. Finding none she let the tears flow freely down her face. She lifted her head towards the ceiling and screamed out in anguish. She screamed and she didn't stop even when Glenn and Darryl and a few others burst through the door. They looked blankly at Jade for a second before Glenn registered that Kat was no longer on the bed and the window which he had left firmly shut was open. He stated that Kat was missing but he didn't have to. Two of the people went downstairs and the music faded. The front door opened several times and the sound of cars leaving. Glenn was staring out the window now searching for answers that weren't coming to him. Nicole came upstairs and reported that everyone had left and the police where on their way. Darryl had stopped Jade's screaming but she remained in a ball whimpering. Nicole tried carefully to pry the rose from Jade's hand but without sucess. Minutes passed and only the sound of Jade's crying and whimpering were heard. In the distance the sounds of sirens could be heard and they stood still waiting for it to come closer. Nicole heard the car stop and another one pull up behind it. She started to head downstairs after she heard the car doors open and close. She reached the door a few seconds after the doorbell was rung. There were four people in total at the door. There were two tall men in police uniform, the woman and man that were standing behind them were in Ambulance uniform. Nicole hadn't made the call, infact it was David that had made the call but she was a little suprised that there were ambulance officers there.

"Come in, their upstairs"

All four walked in and Nicole closed the door behind them before leading them upstairs. The reality of the event was slowly starting to sink in for Nicole but she kept swallowing the lump that was now forming in her throat. By the time they got to the bedroom though she could no longer contain herself and flung herself into Darryl's arms. The female ambulance officer saw Jade and immediatly went to her. The male stopped her for a second and whispered into her ear. She nodded gravely and her face became grim. They male walked over to Jade while the female walked over to Nicole. The policemen walked over to Glenn who was still by the window. Glenn turned around and his face was full of mixed emotions. He had tears in his eyes and his expression kept changing from anger to sadness to agony and frustration.

"I'm sargent Mark Brendler and this is my partner, Darren Waters."
"I'm Glenn Young." They shook hands politely
"Who are the other people?" Darren asked whilst grabbing a small notebook and pen from his left shirt pocket
"That is Nicole and Darryl and the one clinging to the bed is Jade"
"Mmhmm. The call reported a kidnapping is that true?"
"Yes." Glenn clenched his teeth in anger but practised great restraint in not yelling at them.
"Who was the person kidnapped? What are all your relationship with her? Was there any notes or other evidence?"

The questions came over and over again and then some where asked again much to Glenn's annoyance.

"It was my girlfriend, Kat that was taken from here by that bloody arsehole Michael. He fucking drugged her and then took her from me, from all of us and all because you stupid cops wouldn't let her file any charges. He drugged her and then stole her leaving a stupid dead rose, the one that Jade is holding now."
"We see." Darren wrote this all down ignoring the insults directed at the police force. Mark had moved towards Jade at this point but Darren knew he was still listening.
"And what is Jade's relationship to Kat?"
"She's her twin" Glenn spat out.
Mark turned his head and Darren nodded to tell him that he had indeed heard correctly

They asked a few more questions in regards to where Kat and Jade's parents were, where Glenn's parents were and a few others. The called in a detective squad and soon the place was crawling with men with gloves all trying to find something of use. Nicole and Darryl had been sent home and were to go to the station tomorrow morning. Jade was taken to hospital for observation after they finally managed to get the rose off her. Glenn however was asked to go with the police to make an official report.

Kat opened her eyes slowly and winced at the pain. She went to reach up with her hand to rub her temples in hopes to relieve her growing headache but realised they were tied. She struggled a little and noted that not only her arms were tied but so were her legs. She didn't know what time it was let alone where she was. It was dark and she couldn't see very well. As Kat wriggled some more she was able to relieve the tension a little on her wrist bonds and work out her immediate surroundings. The was tied to a stair pillar that was made of wood and was smooth to touch. Her legs were tucked at an odd angle which Kat could only guess would be extremely painful when she could feel her legs again. Her whole body felt heavy and mostly numb with the exception of her headache. She closed her eyes again and couldn't tell if it was her imagination or not but the smell of rotting roses suddenly surrounded her and seemed to be sufficating her and within a few minutes she blacked out again.

Glenn got back home at around three in the morning. He was tired and yet he couldn't sleep. He roamed around his room a couple of times but couldn't find anything else that may have been of help. There was some powder on his window sill which was the only sign that anything had actually happened. He had called and spoken to his parents at the police station and they were on their way home. The police had tried several times to get in contact with Jade and Kat's parents without success. In the end it was decided they would let the Colorado police know and get them to track down Erick and Lucia.
Glenn sat down on his bed and could smell Kat's perfume. About an hour had passed before Glenn moved again. He grabbed a change of clothes and headed for the spare bedroom and crawled into bed knowing he could not do anything else. He layed awake for god knows how long before exhaustion eventually took over and he fell into a deep, troubled sleep.

Kat awoke to the sun shining onto her face. A quick look around and the pain in her body brought the reality of her situation crushing back to her at full force. She cried softly and this time was able to move her arms. She had some collar type cuffs on her wrists that only allowed her a little freedom. Her legs were still bound but now instead of being tied to stairs she was chained to a bed. Kat noted that she had a collor around her neck which was locked. Off of this collar was a chain that was what was keeping her chained to the bed. She managed to sit up and look around. The room was fairly empty. It had the bed that she was on, a lounge chair and a table with a few bondage type items. Kat turned and looked out the window and could only see pine trees. When she turned back she noticed that someone was in the doorway. It was Michael.

"I see your awake now." He said
"You bastard! Where have you taken me" Kat almost yelled at him
"Now now, I'm the master here and you will speak only when I say you can or ask you a question or else you will have to be punished." Michael walked over the the small table and picked up a something similar to a cat of nine tails. Kat got the hint.
"You are my pet, my Meerkat." He laughed at what seemed to be a private joke for Kat didn't find it at all funny.

"What do you want, you psychopath?"
Michael didn't like that, and he hit her lightly with the whip.
"That was your only warning," he said quietly. "You will not speak to me like that."
Kat went quiet. She didn't know where she was, or how she got there. In fact, everything was fuzzy from just after she and Jade had arrived at Glenn's. Kat strained to remember what had happened, but came up blank. Michael standing over her with a whip, gloating, wasn't helping her concentration either. Kat shut her eyes, hoping that when she opened them, she would be at home, in her bed, with Jade just down the hall so Kat could go in and tell her about her horrible dream. When she opened her eyes, nothing had changed. That was the point in which the reality of the situation finally began to sink in. Kat whimpered quietly, then bit her lip in order to not make any noise. Michael gloated a little more.
"That's much better," he said, shaking out the whip with a practiced move.
"Now, why don't we set out a few ground rules?"

Glenn was frustrated. He had gone to collect Jade from the hospital, and they'd kept him there, waiting, for an hour whilst they stuffed around with forms and doctors and police officers. Eventually, he'd been able to leave, and had driven Jade home. Upon arriving home, Jade had called her parents in Colorado, and left a message at the desk for them. She expected that they would be calling back shortly. In the meanwhile, she didn't quite know what to do with herself. Glenn made them both some lunch, which they ate in silence. Once they'd finished and cleared up, Glenn finally spoke.
"I don't think the police are going to do this very well," he said, quietly. Jade agreed.
"So I guess that means it's up to us to find her and get her home, doesn't it?"
Jade looked up from the table. "I guess it does."

"Goddess Artemis
Huntress of the night,
Embrace me in your passions
And speak to me of your mysteries.
Lead me softly through the briars of my mind,
Help me to be strong.
Show me the strength of your roses,
And the pleasures of the night."

It had been 3 days since Kat had first been kidnapped. She was still tied to the bed with the view of pine trees. Her stockings had several long ladders in them, and were ripped in places. Her shoes had been removed after she'd managed to kick Michael in the balls with one spiked heel - he had been in a lot of pain after that, and she had been "punished" for her misbehaviour with a severe whipping. He had stopped once he drew blood, but only just. Kat was terrified. There wasn't another way to describe it. Michael daily threatened her with rape, and often mauled her as she slept. She didn't sleep often now.

Kat still didn't know where she was. She hadn't heard any type of traffic whilst she'd been conscious, and all she could see was pine trees. She had started her chant to Artemis in the early hours of the morning, and so far it was helping. The repetition kept her mind off her situation. Kat had no way of knowing what the police or anyone else was doing to find her. She only hoped that there was someone looking for her. She had faith in Jade. Her sister wouldn't leave her here, all alone, with Michael.

Kat continued her chant.
