ade and Kat exchanged startled looks. They'd both met the crystal gazer numerous times, and she had never reacted like that before. The woman quailed under Matt's steady gaze and slipped silently out of the tent, muttering to herself.
"Silly old bat," Matt muttered. "If she weren't a genuine gypsy the council would have kicked her out years ago."
"She's a freak," said Peter, shaking his head.
"Just like everybody else who works here," he continued in a low voice, before stalking out of the tent.
Matt looked sadly after his son's retreating back.
"I've tried to teach him... he just doesn't see the magic."
Matt waved his wand in the air and a shower of sparks came out the end of the wand and settled over the two girls, making them sparkle in the lamp light. Matt walked back deeper into his tent, & the girls left the tent.
"Poor Matt," murmured Jade "He really wants Peter to learn his magic."
"Yeah... But he doesn't believe. You can't so magick if you don't Believe. Can't see faeries unless you believe, can't practice witchcraft if you look down your nose at it, and can't do magick unless you believe that there's any such thing." Kat paused and flickered a glance towards the tarot reading tent.
Jade cut in before Kat could even open her mouth.
"Not yet."
"But-"
"Not yet. This is *our* time, we can see the others later."
"It's just Glenn... And we don't have to stay long, he'll be working."
"Kat."
"Ok, Ok..."
"Should never have given you that reading," teased Jade.
Kat stuck out her tongue at Jade as they moved towards the craft stalls, and started browsing. For Kat's last birthday Jade had given her a tarot reading at the tent. The reading had been performed by Glenn, and Jade personally had her doubts that she had gotten her money's worth of fortune telling. Kat hadn't said much about her reading afterwards - she'd spoken more about Glenn than anything else they'd seen that week. Including the magic show, which was *very* unusual.
"I know what you're thinking," murmured Kat with a smile as they moved through the tables.
Jade grinned.
"Actually," she lied, "I was thinking about that crystal woman."
Kat was instantly diverted.
"That reminds me," she said, reaching for her bag. "Here's your book."
Jade accepted it and put it in her own bag.
"Did you like it?"
Kat didn't answer, because she was still rummaging around in her bag. She pulled out a paper packet, and unwrapped it.
"And look what else I found!"
In her hand were 3 stones, identical to the 3 Jade had found, except these were red, yellow & gray.
"I found these this morning, when I was going through my things. Mum's going another 'charity' house cleaning. They were in a chest with a whole lot of clothes my mother would never approve of," continued Kat with a grin.
"Odd," commented Jade, poking the stones with her finger.
"Really. Especially seeing as though I don't remember ever seeing them before, and they were in *my* chest."
Kat slipped the stones back into her bag.
"I figured I'd give one to Glenn. Then we can be the "stoned" group."
Jade groaned. "That's terrible, Kat."
"I know," she replied with a grin. "That's why I said it."
The girls continued to browse for another hour, Jade buying the things on her mother's list & some beads, and Kat buying a tarot deck, some celtic music & a book. Then they made their way back through the market towards the tents.
"Who are you going to give the other two stones to?" asked Jade, curiously.
Kat thought about it for a minute.
"Erick?"
Jade shrugged. "Why not Peter?"
"Could give one to Erick and one to Peter."
"I don't know Erick very well."
"That's because you've only met him once," teased Kat.
Jade shrugged again. "They're your stones."
Kat gave her a look.
"Don't be like that. You know I'd love for you to meet Erick... It's just that my mother doesn't like him, so it's a bit hard to organise..." Kat trailed off with a sigh.
"Dazz hasn't met him either."
Jade linked her arm through Kat's.
"How about this. Mum's going out tonight. Why don't you and Glenn and Erick and anyone else you want me to meet come over. Dazz will be there too. We can all sit around and talk for a few hours, get to know each other. How's that?"
Kat gave Jade a hard hug. "You're the best sister I've ever had, you know that?"
"I'm the only sister you've ever had," replied Jade with a laugh.
Ahead of them, Glenn stepped out of his tent and into the afternoon sun. He was 'in costume' - wearing gypsy pants & a vest that left his chest bare.
"Ooh," murmured Kat, appreciatively. "Hold my bag?"
Jade laughingly accepted Kat's bag, and watched as Kat ran the last few meters to Glenn and jumped on him. Despite being taken by surprise, he caught her easily and twirled her around before kissing her hello. Kat had her arms & legs wrapped around him and he lowered her to the ground as Jade reached them. Kat was beaming. Jade smiled in reply, & handed Kat her bag.
"Hello, Jade," said Glenn with a smile.
Jade smiled back. "Hello. You look remarkably calm for someone who just got hit by a hurricane."
"Hey!" exclaimed Kat, poking Jade in the side.
Glenn laughed. "A hurricane that little is easy to deal with."
Kat turned to him, but he easily deflected her hands and wrapped her in his arms.
"Gee, the flies are bad today," he teased.
The 3 of them laughed.
"Let me go, I got you a present."
Glenn obediently let go, and Kat produced the red stone. Glenn accepted it and looked at it curiously.
"And what exactly is this?"
"We have no idea," replied Jade with a grin. "I found 3 and Kat found 3 more. Kat has one, I have one, Darryl has one, and now you have one."
"Who has the other two?"
"No one, yet," answered Kat. "Which reminds me, what are you doing tonight?"
While Kat arranged with Glenn to go to Jade's later that evening, Jade noticed the crystal ball woman staring at them again. Jade frowned.
"Kat, that woman is looking at us again."
Kat & Glenn both stopped talking and turned to watch. The crystal ball woman turned and ducked back into her tent.
"Weird," commented Glenn.
"You noticed," teased Kat with a smile.
Glenn squinted up at the sun.
"I have to get back to work. I'll collect Erick and meet you at Jade's at... 6:30?"
Jade nodded her agreement, and Glenn kissed Kat's cheek, waved, & went back into his tent.
"Did I ever mention how good he looks without a shirt?"
"Oh, one or twenty times," laughed Jade. "Let's go get some lunch in town. That crystal woman has freaked me out."
The girls walked back to the car & drove back to town.
***
That evening, Jade moved around the living room, removing the evidence of her brothers' "games" earlier that afternoon. The boys had gone to a sleep over party & Linda was out, so Jade had the house to herself - at least until the others showed up. She & Kat had organised the living room after they'd had lunch - moving couches, covering the floor with cushions, and placing candles around the room. They had both been very satisfied with the result. The doorbell rang, and Jade went to let Darryl in. They kissed hello in the hallway for several long minutes.
"Hello."
"Hi."
They smiled at each other.
"Come help me light the candles."
Darryl followed Jade down to the living room and looked around. He laughed.
"This is worse than Kat's bedroom," he teased.
"It should be, it's the combination of all her candles and all mine and all Mum's."
He laughed again. "The cushions look interesting."
"Later," replied Jade with a laugh as the doorbell rang again.
Jade went up to answer the door, leaving Darryl to light candles.
Standing outside the front door was Kat. Jade was a little suprised that she had used the front door then realised Kat's parents were lurking in their car. Jade let Kat inside and closed the door before giving Kat a hug. Kat wasn't wearing her skirt anymore. She was wearing a pear of semi dressy pants and a blue silk shirt. Aunt Jen must of made her change Jade thought.
"Happy Birthday" Kat said holding out a small package wrapped in blue and purple tissue paper with a gold ribbon around it.
"Thanks but you do know it isn't until next Saturday"
Kat laughs
"Yes but I finished it this afternoon and wanted to give it to you now" Kat smiled and handed Jade the package.
They walked into the lounge room and found Darryl sitting on the floor proped against the couch petting Midnight.
"Ha you *do* like cats" Jade teased before sitting down next to Darryl as he pokes his tounge out at her. Jade leans over and bites it softly before kissing Darryl
"Oh please, do you have to do that here" Kat asked pretending to be sick
"Yes" Jade replied then looked at the present in her lap "Can I open it"
"That is why I gave it to you"
"Oh" Jade says laughing at her silliness.
Jade unties the ribbon and gently unwraps the tissue paper. She sees some blue velvet material and stands up to let it hand. A gasp slips from Jade's lips as she reveals a long blue velvet cape with hood and a few small stars and moons sewn onto the bottom of it.
"Oh thank you Kat, it's wonderful and it goes so perfect with my dress" Jade puts the cloak on and Kat smiles glad that Jade likes the present.
"Your welcome, are you going to tell a story tonight?" Kat asked
"Maybe, I don't know, how about we see as we go"
The door bell rings and Kat bounces up.
"That will be Glenn and Erick" She runs to the door and Jade just sits down next to Darryl careful not to crumple the cloak. Midnight crawls of Darryl's lap and crawls onto Jade's hiding under the cloak. Kat returns a few minutes later grinning enormously and trailing behind her was Glenn, Peter and Erick. They all settled around the lounge on numourus cushions. General chit chat occured and the party was sort of started. As Jade went to get up Midnight crawled out from under her cloak. Kat saw it and laughed along with Glenn and Peter.
"A witches cat I see" Erick said to no-one in particular
Jade and Kat went into the kitchen to get drinks. Darryl and Glenn were talking about soccer and Erick was trying to convince Peter that magick does exist. Jade and Kat talked in the kitchen about their boys before returning with the drinks. They handed them out and then and Kat settled down again.
"Tell us a story Jade" Kat said before Jade had managed to sit down. Kat loved listening to Jade telling stories. She just knew what to say and how to keep the audience captivated but much to Kat's disappointment she often didn't share her stories but kept them for herself. Kat nudged Glenn in the ribs and he piped up getting the hint.
"Yes Jade, tell us a story"
The other members all joined in and eventually Jade gave up
"Okay, okay" she says while glaring at Kat who as per usual put on an "innocent" look.
Jade moved over to one side of the lounge room and made a circle of candles before stepping into it. She stood to her full height being 5'11" and pulled her hood up before turning to her audience. Kat smiled and Darryl wolf whistled. Erick, Peter and Glenn who had never seen Jade tell a story before seemed captivated like a dear in headlights. To them it seemed that Jade's whole apperiance and personality had changed. The simple fact was that it had. Jade seemed to become the story before it even started.
Slowly Jade lifted her head and then started to tell a story of long forgotten
times. At least, forgotten since the last time she'd told it. As Jade began her story, Kat glanced at Darryl, who'd also heard the tale before, and they grinned at each other. Jade's stories were great, but because it took her so long to write one that she'd allow out to the "general public", her favourites became familiar within a couple of tellings.
Not wanting to disturb Erick, Glenn & Peter, who were all listening attentively, Kat & Darryl moved up to the kitchen to get new drinks. They sat at the kitchen table with a bottle of rum, drinking, talking & catching up on all the little things they didn't talk about while other people were around, while Jade told her story. About half an hour & 3/4 of a bottle later, movement was heard from the living room. Kat looked down the hall.
"I think Jade's finished her story," said Kat with a smile.
"Let's go back and check."
"Good idea. We'll have to be quiet though... Just in case she hasn't."
With Kat giggling and Darryl holding her up, Kat & Darryl moved down the hall to the back room. Jade had, indeed, finished her story, and Glenn, Erick & Peter were stretching kinks out of their legs. The four of them looked up as Darryl & Kat appeared in the door way.
"She had a bit to drink," explained Darryl. "I forgot how little she is."
Glenn lifted one arm towards the door, and Kat moved over to him. She crawled into his lap and snuggled in.
"Hullo sweetie."
Kat responded with kisses - up his neck to his mouth, then several in the one place.
Glenn responded in kind.
The other 4 completed a circle, and after about 10 minutes, Jade threw a small cushion at Kat, which hit her on the back on the head.
"Ouch!" complained Glenn & Kat together.
"That hurt!" Kat protested, rubbing the back of her head.
"I bet this hurt more," said Glenn, sticking out his tongue. "You bit me!"
"Jade hit me on the head with a pillow," explained Kat, still rubbing her head.
Two sets of accusing eyes turned to Jade, who held up her hands in defense.
"Well, I had to do something," she explained.
"That doesn't help my tongue!"
"Want me to kiss it better?" offered Kat with a instantly interested look.
Glenn grinned at her. "Might make it feel a *little* better," he admitted.
"Hey, knock it off you two," said Erick. "Or I'll make Kat come sit on *my* lap."
Kat & Glenn laughed, and Kat turned around so she was facing the group. Glenn's hands vanished under her top, but they kept their mouths to themselves.
"So," said Jade. "What are we going to do? How about some free tarot readings, Glenn?"
Glenn glanced up. "I didn't bring my deck," he replied, pulling Kat close.
Peter was starting to get his "it's a couples thing" look, so while Jade was sitting next to Darryl, she didn't climb onto his lap or any such thing.
"So, Erick. What to do you do?" asked Peter.
Erick smiled. "Magick," he said, and laughed at Peter's expression. "Seriously though. I'm pagan. I met Glenn at school, I met Kat through Glenn, I met Jade & Darryl through Kat, and now I'm meeting you."
"Well now that we all like each other," said Kat brightly, ignoring the look on Peter's face, "I have a present for you."
She produced the remaining two stones, and handed the yellow to Peter, and the gray to Erick. They both looked at them curiously.
"Hey," said Erick. "A gypsy stone."
The phone rang suprising everyone. Jade excused herself and went into the kitchen to answer it. About five minutes later she returned.
"Who was that?" Kat asked
"Brian's mother, Timmy forget his medication and he has been petting their dog so he has had a reaction"
Kat nodded.
"I will take you if you want baby" Darryl offered but Jade declined
"You have been drinking, you can come but I will drive"
"Can I come?" Peter asked.
Jade nodded and left Kat, Erick and Glenn at her house.
The drive to Brian's house didn't take long. Jade went inside and check on both her brothers as she hadn't actually seen them so far on the weekend.
She made sure Tim was okay and then headed back out to the car. Darryl and Peter were talking about computers and Jade just rolled her eyes before heading back home.
They arrived back home parking the car out the back and entering through the back door. Jade stopped and grabbed a drink from the kitchen before heading into the lounge. Kat was fast asleep on the couch. Glenn looked up and
then explained that Kat had fallen asleep due to the alcohol in her system. Jade was familar with that and she chuckled. Kat didn't hold alcohol to well.
Peter looked at the time and realised he had to get going. After Peter had left Jade sat down in Darryl's lap. He stroked her hair absently and they listened to Erick and Glenn talk about magic. Erick was rolling the grey
stone Kat had given him in his hands turning it over looking for something but Jade couldn't tell what. Linda came home and popped her head in to say goodnight.
"Oh hello Erick, how is your mother?" Linda asked
"You know him?" Jade asked a little shocked stopping Erick from answering
"Yes dear, remember Grace who helps me run some of my classes, that is Erick's mother. Erick comes and helps out sometimes."
"Small world hey Lyn?" Dazz said.
Jade smiled to herself as she knew what her mother was going to say next.
"When will you learn you can call me mum Darryl" Linda laughed "Anyway I am going to bed night all"
"Night" The group replied as Linda's head disapeared from the doorway.
They talked well into the night and around midnight Erick left. Glenn unfolded the sofa bed and both Glenn and Darryl moved Kat into bed as Jade got some bedding. They blew all the candles out and Darryl and Jade headed to her bedroom. Jade crawled into bed and Darryl snuggled up to her. He stroked the back of her head and she soon feel asleep. He stared at her quite some time fascinated by the way the moonlight shone onto her face. He wasn't sure if it was his eyes playing tricks on him or if it was the moon but he was sure that Jade had a blue tinge.
Meanwhile in Ericks home he crawled into bed and looked once again at the stone that Kat had given him. He had seen several Gypsy stones before but knew the stories about the six divinity stones. He couldn't help wondering if this was one of them. He had done a past life regression on Kat and she was a gypsy childe. He shook his head and turned out the light. Just as he was drifting off to sleep he saw the stone glow. He was suddenly very awake. It was a divinity stone. He jumped out of bed and went straight to his parents bedroom.
