at rinsed her hair one last time, and emerged from the bath, after a quick peek to make sure Sable still had his back towards her. She dried off quickly, and wrapped herself in the large fluffy towel provided.
"You can turn around now."
He turned, and looked at her.
"You need to change your ears and things."
"Oh, yes."
Kat looked him over, and soon looked more like a feline, with long soft ears with golden fur, and matching tail.
"How's that?"
Sable blinked.
"Incredible."
Jade entered the room then, and gasped.
"Goodness. That's very effective. We do look very alike, don't we? Ok, I've told the staff that my cousin, Sapphire, arrived late last night, having been sent here while her father was away on business. You'll be here for a month, most likely. Can you keep that up for a month?"
"Oh, yes. It's the setting it up that takes the effort. Maintaining it takes very little energy."
"Good. They'll be here soon, so let's get dressed. Unfortunately, it's going to have to be dresses. Sable, take those down to the laundry, and send in Emerald and Carnelian."
"Yes, Jade."
Sable left the room with Kat's clothes, and Jade returned her attention to her wardrobe.
As Jade rummaged through the various dresses she explained to Kat the
hierarchy of her world. Kat listened intently and was amazed at how
Jade's society worked. From what Kat could gather Jade was head of her
family and thus she was as responsible for them as they were responsible
to her. After that the only person Jade really had to answer to was her
King and Queen. The more Kat listened the more she started to realise
that Jade was fairly intelligent and made sure she was up to date with
current events, even if they didn't affect her. Kat was still absorbing
all the information Jade had just past on when she noticed Jade's tone
change.
"Sorry?" Kat asked looking up.
"I said I think this one would suit you. Golden fur isn't the easiest to
dress too."
"Oh, I didn't think of that."
Jade smiled and handed Kat a red dress. Kat took the dress and stared
for a moment at the hole in the back of the dress. It looked deliberate
and for a brief moment Kat wondered what on earth it was for until she
realised it was for her tail. There were a few things she would
definitely have to get used to. Kat dressed quickly and then turned to
look at herself in the mirror. The skirt swirled as she spun. The red in
the dress making her hair look more golden and fiery. The top of the
dress was V-necked and cut just to show a hint of cleavage. The dress
was sleeveless and well suited for the sunny day outside.
"Yes, I think that suits you well." Jade said as she put the other
dresses away before grabbing one for herself. She then invited Kat to
sit and then smiled as Kat sat.
"A tad annoyed are we?"
"What gives you that impression?" Kat asked.
"Your tail. You are certainly not used to it and it shows." Jade paused
as she took a seat. "You see are emotions are reflected in movements of
our tails. When you sat down uncomfortably on your tail it twitched in
annoyance."
"Oh."
"You can learn to control it, just as you can learn to control your
facial expressions. Firstly let me show you the two easiest ways to sit."
Jade stood and then demonstrated how to sit in an armchair where she
coiled her tail around her body. Then she sat on the bed and lifted her
tail first before sitting. Kat did the same and once she got used to the
fact that she had to move her tail out of the way she found sitting down
a lot easier. She smiled pleased with herself. Jade smiled warmly in return.
"Here, brush your fur and I'll grab some accessories for the two of us."
Jade went to leave the room and then turned at the last second "Don't
forget your ears have moved."
Kat picked up the brush and wondered what Jade had meant as she ran the
brush through her fur. Two seconds later she realised and laughed as she
caught one of her ears with the brush. She put the brush down and had a
proper look at herself. Her now slitted eyes looked back. There were
physical changes she could see but there were some other changes she
noticed. She had noticed she could hear a little better and when she
smiled she realised her teeth were slightly more pointed. She resumed
brushing her fur when Jade returned.
"Here, allow me." Jade offered and put down a handful of jewellery on
the vanity unit. Kat handed her the brush and allowed Jade to brush it
and toy with it before she put it up in a style she was obviously happy
with. She then put the brush down and studied Kat's face critically for
a few minutes. Then holding Kat's chin she applied some eye-shadow and
blush. Lastly handing Kat a lipstick. Kat applied the lipstick and then
looked at her reflection. The make up that had been applied by Jade was
barely there and seemed to just highlight Kat's features which she
approved off. She then turned and watched Jade do her own hair and make
up. Kat noticed that the silence was not even strained. She had only met
Jade the night before and yet they seemed comfortable in each others
presence. There was a sense of rapport that Kat had only just noticed and wondered if Jade had also noticed it. Her thoughts were interrupted when Jade stood. Kat did the same.
"I got this necklace for you and this broach." Jade said handing the two
items to Kat. Jade then fastened two jewelled combs into her hair, put
on a white gold necklace and a broach the same as the one she had handed
Kat with the exception of the jewel in the broach. Kat studied the
broach. It looked somewhat like a family crest with a cat curled up on
top. The belly of the cat contained a Sapphire. The belly on Jade's
broach held blue Jade.
"Sable and Coal will be here shortly. Coal will be your escort."
"My guard you mean?" Kat asked.
"That too." Jade said honestly. "But it would be inappropriate for
someone of your stature to be unescorted."
Kat relaxed at Jade's honesty. She didn't feel like a prisoner and was
clearly not being treated as one but she knew that Jade was no fool and
probably keeping a close eye on her. Truth be told, Kat was doing the
same in regards to everything she saw.
Shortly after the two boys returned. They were showered and dressed
formally. Sable offered his arm to Jade and Coal offered his to Kat with
distrust showing briefly in his eyes. Kat did notice that his tail
remained still however and she almost doubted what she had seen. They
were escorted to the gardens outside and sat down to a late breakfast of
primarily fruit. Kat's stomach grumbled and she realised she was quiet
hungry. Sable laughed warmly at her and she pretended to look
unimpressed which seemed to make him laugh all the more. Kat joined in
and sat down, carefully avoiding sitting on her tail. When she looked up
she saw Coal scowling and Jade with a strange smile on her face. She
simply chose to ignore Coal and grabbed herself an apple. They ate in
silence. During the meal a guard informed them that the inspectors had
arrived. Jade nodded in acknowledgement and finished her breakfast
before standing. Sable went to stand too but she laid a hand on his
shoulder.
"You stay here with Sapphire, Coal can escort me."
Sable remained seated, his eyebrow raised in question. Coal stood up
stiffly and escorted Jade into the house.
"I thought you wanted me to look after her."
"If I could trust you to look after her." Jade said coldly.
"Lady?"
Jade guided Coal into a deserted corridor.
"We are playing a dangerous game here, with the inspectors and having
her here pretending to have been like us for years. I do not need you
giving her the cold shoulder and acting like you completely distrust
her. Reign your feelings in and stop drawing attention to yourself and
her. Plus I need her to feel relaxed. The more relaxed she is the more
she will trust us. I don't know what's going on but I have a feeling her
presence here is no accident. She could have ended up anywhere in this
world but she didn't. She arrived here."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be Coal. If you can't trust her trust me."
"Yes Lady."
Jade nodded and then hugged Coal. She knew he was only being protective
but sometimes he really drove her nuts. Plus she was amused by how Sable
had taken to Kat. She had known him a long time and he wasn't one to
instantly warm to someone. But what interested Jade more was how Kat
seemed equally taken to Sable. The other thing that had amazed Jade was
Kat being able to see the amulet. They had discovered ages ago the
amulets hid themselves from others who didn't wear one. Perhaps Kat too
had an amulet, but Jade hadn't noticed. She would have to ask.
Perhaps the same way Kat had explained the transmutation was magic
directed inwards and thus caused no outward ripple was the same way the
amulet hid themselves. It was something Jade didn't understand though.
Could magic be sensed like sensing the wind? The idea troubled her and
she promised herself to set aside some time to look at the Book. She
shook her head to clear her thoughts as she entered the main foyer.
"Gentlemen, I hope I haven't kept you waiting."
"Not at all Lady Auvreanae. We understand you are a busy women and thank
you for your time."
"Can I offer you any refreshments?"
"We thank you for your kindness but we do not wish to trouble you.
Perhaps if we get started we can leave and thus not distrupt your day
any longer than required."
Jade nodded and swept her arm out towards the rest of the house. "After
you."
Jade and Coal walked with the two inspectors as they toured the house.
They walked back and forth in a few corridors and Jade mentally noted
those areas. When they neared her wing of the house she said nothing and
a quick look to Coal indicated he shouldn't react either. One of the men
stood rigidly in front of her room and then like he was possessed walked
purposely forward. He got as far as her study and then looked around
like he had lost something. Aware Jade was watching he instantly stopped
looking.
"Nothing in the house, perhaps we could look outside."
"Certainly."
They headed outside but there was no more indications that they had
found anything out of place. It wasn't long before they met up with
Sable and Kat. Jade almost held her breath but the men seemed to take no
real notice of Kat, much to her relief. Shortly after Coal guided them
out and Jade sat down exhausted.
"So that's how they do it." Kat said catching both Sable and Jade's
instant attention.
"Do what?"
"Detect magic. The little one of the two was using magic to find magic."
"Your kidding?"
"Not at all, we do so in our world sometimes. It's fairly simple to do
actually."
"Interesting. Very interesting."
"Why's that?"
"Well, if they're using magic they're breaking the law themselves. If we could prove it somehow without revealing our hand... Hmm."
Kat nodded, thoughtfully.
"Without letting them know I can do magic? I'll think about it."
Jade nodded and glanced at Sable.
"When will your people try and bring you back?"
"A week from the time I arrived. And then two days later. And then a week after that."
"Okay. And what do you think should be our first step?"
"Well, I'd quite like to see that room again."
"What room?"
"The room I appeared in."
Jade hesitated. Although she was beginning to trust Kat, she wasn't all that sure about showing her the room again.
"You don't trust me enough yet?" Kat asked intuitively.
"Oh no, it's not that," Jade lied. "It's that for the visit, I had them put the fireplace back against the wall. My father always used to just step over it, but I was always getting soot on me and my skirt, so I had it removed. But a bare wall looks a little obvious, so whenever there are inspections, I always have it put back."
"Do you think that they have forgotten that the room is there?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well surely they know that the room is there? I mean, their ancestors split the world."
"Well, no. Not if they never told them. You see, people over here don't know the world was split."
"Neither do ours, for the most part."
"So the site where they split it wouldn't be "special" because they didn't want people to know."
"But surely the council knows."
"From what I understand, my how-ever-many-times great grandfather built our home on the site because it was special. But the other coven members agreed that its location would be kept a secret. So the location was passed down within my family, but none of the council know it's there."
"You think they don't know of its existence?"
"I think they might be looking for it."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, magic is illegal. So whenever anyone is found doing magic, they're taken, questioned, and killed. But every now and then, we have these searches, like today. They randomly search people's houses, looking for magic, and if they find anything tangible, it's confiscated."
"Right. But you think they're looking for the room?"
"I do. Why else would they be searching houses? It's people that do magic, not objects."
"Do you mind if I do an inspection of the house?"
"Why?"
"I want to know if the room can be found."
Jade pondered for a moment.
"It's a good idea, but what do I do with all my staff?"
"My lady?" Sable queried, and Jade looked at him with raised eyebrows.
"Formal, Sable?"
"My apologies. Still on edge from having them here, I think. If I may make a suggestion?"
Jade nodded.
"We could hold a fair. It's been almost 3 years since the last one."
"That is a good idea."
"A fair?" Kat queried, wondering if it was the same sort of fair she was used to.
"Yes. We have market stalls, and archery contests, and people who juggle fire. And we give all the staff five copper pieces and a day off."
"Ah. Wonderful idea."
"Yes, the only problem is the time it takes to arrange. We have to make the stalls, and bake food, and tell everyone, and hire the entertainment..."
"How long does all of that take?"
"Months."
"How about this then. Entertainment, find some and tell them a story about how you had someone organised, but they've pulled out, and could they possibly help you out by attending on short notice, next week. Telling people - how do you usually do that? By letter?"
"Yes, and notices about the town."
"Write one, and I'll make copies. Same with the food, and the stalls. If you can make one, I can make copies."
"What do we tell the staff?"
"That you've been planning it in secret for several months, but now the time has come that it can no longer be a secret. And tell them. Ask for their help with preparing the garden, as nobody will believe that it just happened to be miraculously cleared over night, then we'll bring out the stalls and the food, they can help set it up, and we'll have the fair."
"You're sure you can make the copies, and they won't be noticeable to the council?"
"I can hide it. And you're sure that the staff will all go to the fair?"
"Yes. I'll close the house for the day."
"Wonderful. We should get started."
"Yes, we should."
Jade sat in her study, looking at the fireplace. Within the cellar, in an area none of the staff ever went, Kat had created a "bubble", as she called it, where she could do magic without it being detected. They had brought in one of the old stalls from the last fair, and fixed it up with a few nails and a fresh whitewash, and Kat had duplicated it 39 times. Then, Jade had gone into town and quietly spoken to the many shop keepers, offering them a free stall at her fair. They had all accepted. So many had accepted, that Kat had needed to create another 15 stalls for wares, as well as 20 stalls for food. They were going to have 75 stalls - more than any fair Jade had ever been to. She had purchased food of the type usually found at fairs, and Kat had duplicated it many times over. They had enough food to feed several thousand people - and Jade was sure it would all be eaten, as the notices Kat had copied had been so plentiful that they had one on every street corner in town, and extras which Kat had suggested putting in shop windows - an idea that Jade would never have considered, but worked amazingly well. She was sure everyone else would be copying that idea next time they held a fair. The letters to each household had been copied, and individual touches added to the bottom of each one. I hope you are able to make it on such short notice, or I hope you will bring the children - just enough to make them unique. Kat had also made covers for the tops of each stall that was going to have food on it. It was clearly an extravagance, having them made of linen, but Kat had insisted on not putting the food directly on the wooden surface of the stalls. Coal had also managed to gain the services of two troupes of entertainers. The cost of them was better than Jade had expected - Coal was a wonderful bargainer, and it was clear at the short notice that they hadn't had any other engagements.
Everything was arranged, and it had only taken them four days to organise. That morning, on Kat's 6th day with them, Jade had told the staff of the fair, and they had spent the day clearing the area and setting up the stalls. There was a party atmosphere throughout the house, and Jade silently wondered why it was that she'd waited three years before holding another fair. Then she recalled all the work the previous fair had been, and smiled. The answer was obvious, really. Earlier that evening, she had gathered the staff and given them their coins, and then dismissed them until the day after next. And now, she was sitting in her study, thinking. Tomorrow, Kat would be doing her tour of the house. They had decided to do it in the morning, and make the necessary appearance at the fair in the afternoon. The fair would continue long into the night, and they would all need a sleep in the following morning. The only thing Jade was concerned about was if Kat disappeared. That would be extremely difficult to explain, as she had blamed half of the reason for having the fair on Sapphire, her cousin, loving them but her family being unable to hold them. She hadn't mentioned her fears to anyone else, however. Kat had assured her that it would be a full week, which would mean the first attempt to bring her home would be on the evening of the fair - and Kat would be at the fair, not inside the house then. Jade made a mental note to tell Sable he was assigned to Kat for the duration of the fair. And the evening? whispered a cheeky voice inside Jade's head. She smiled. No, she wouldn't do that. She had already arranged for their outfits to match, she'd leave things as they were.
Elsewhere in the house, a clock struck twelve, and Jade sighed. It was going to be a long day tomorrow, she needed to get some sleep. Jade closed the study door gently behind her and retired.
